Cool Pools Tip - Salt vs Chlorine

Own or maintain Barbados Real Estate with swimming pools learn your options and some great tips!  Cool Pools Tip – Salt vs Chlorine do you know the difference?

Swimming Pool owners have used Chlorine to sanitize pools for decades. Chlorine pools require lots of maintenance to make sure that the swimming pool stays clean. With technological developments, many people are discovering and changing over to saltwater treated pools. The compound NaCl, also known as salt is produced by Chlorine and sodium. While both options contain Chlorine, you will find distinct differences within the two methods of swimming pool maintenance.

The Cost

The cost of Chlorine pools are less expensive at the start, where saltwater pools require purchasing a Chlorine generator. Saltwater-treated pools are less expensive in the long run, where Chlorine-treated pools require buying triple the quantity of chemicals than saltwater-treated pools; therefore costing more over time.

 Swimming Pool Maintenance

Maintenance of Chlorine pools calls for your swimming pool maintenance company (best left to professionals less expensive in long run) to put in the chlorine physically to the water. The maintenance person will conduct a test to establish the quantity of chlorine they need to add to the pool. This test is done routinely to maintain the balance of pH, calcium and alkalinity levels. Full maintenance of your swimming pool is best left to professionals as it is less expensive in the long run.

Maintenance of salt-water pools doesn’t need great levels of chlorine as it uses the chlorine in the raw form. Chlorine is generated by using electrolysis which takes place through a salt water chlorinator that uses electricity. This natural type of Chlorine is maintained instantly. Even though regular testing is done, it is not as extreme as with Chlorine-treated pools. The pool and pump should be safe as this type of cleaning uses very low levels of salt.

The balance of the water in chlorine-treated pools are extremely important as any changes can cause our skin and eyes to become very sensitive. The chemical Chloramine causes the pool to become unbalanced and in turn irritates the skin and eyes. This chemical is a mixture of chlorine and bodily fluids. Colin Springer, owner of Cool Pools Barbados cautions “it is very dangerous when handling chlorine and recommends using a proven professional swimming pool maintenance company but if handling yourself wearing protective gear is a must”. Additionally he also warned “it is equally dangerous to the person mixing the chlorine with water and again they too should protect themselves”.

Salt-water pools are softer on the skin as the level of salt in the pool is about one third of a human teardrop. This therefore means that the skin and eyes will not suffer any irritation as they sometimes do with chlorinated pools. Mr. Springer of Cool Pools, also points out that salt is a natural source and is therefore the healthier alternative for the environment

Tips when deciding:

1)      Chlorine-treated pool costs more over time, and calls for more maintenance.

2)      You can experience discomfort from being in the unbalanced water.

3)      A lower level of chlorine replenishes salt-water pools automatically. They therefore require less maintenance if set up properly.
